Draper broke ground Oct. 6 on a microelectronics center in Lowell's Hamilton Canal Innovation District. The Cambridge-based nonprofit says the 111,000-square-foot building will create more than 100 jobs.

The Integrated Microelectronics Production & Advanced Chip Technology Center, known as the IMPACT Center, will house facilities for chip design, production and packaging. Draper says the new positions will include technicians, engineers and business executives.

"The IMPACT Center will expand our onshore capacity to create and deploy the systems our nation depends on," Draper President and CEO Jerry M. Wohletz said in the company's announcement.

The project is part of the Lowell Innovation Network Corridor. Draper identifies Wexford Science & Technology as the real estate developer, with GMH Communities and First Atlantic.

The announcements give different completion targets: Draper's Oct. 6 release says 2029, while UMass Lowell's release that day says 2028. A single confirmed completion date is not established by those releases.
