Gov. Maura Healey is asking the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to make girls flag football an official varsity sport after participation reached 90 teams statewide this year.
In an Oct. 9 announcement, Healey cited the sport's growth and urged formal recognition and a consistent competitive structure for players.
The New England Patriots Foundation began a Massachusetts high school pilot with eight schools in 2023. Participation grew to 23 teams in 2024 and 90 during the 2026 season, according to the announcement. Patriots owner Robert Kraft also backed MIAA recognition.
Under a process approved by the MIAA board in 2025, sports can seek an emerging-sport designation before potentially advancing to championship status as participation grows. The process requires support from at least 15% of MIAA member schools, the administration said.
