Ma lié, a contemporary Thai restaurant led by chef Supasin "Mark" Chunhachachavankul, lists a limited-seating soft opening for Thursday, Oct. 8, at South County Commons in South Kingstown, according to the restaurant's website. The website lists a grand opening for Oct. 17.

The restaurant is at 50 S. County Commons Way, Unit E-1. Its website lists hours of 4 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with last orders at 9:30 p.m. The South County Star reported Sept. 16 that the restaurant planned to serve lunch from noon to 3 p.m. and dinner from 4 to 9:30 p.m. The website, checked Oct. 8, lists only the evening hours.

For the soft opening, the website takes reservation requests through an online form and says requests "require a separate confirmation from the restaurant." As of Oct. 8, it does not address walk-ins.

The name comes from ma-li, the jasmine flower in Thai, according to the website. The site previews three dishes, Nuer Yang, Panang Phed and Yum Som O, but had not posted a full menu as of Oct. 8.

Ma lié takes over the space that held Tong Ta Thai Restaurant. State business records show both names belong to the same company, Mahachai LLC, which registered "Malie" as a business name on July 30 and has used the Tong Ta name since 2022. Chunhachachavankul is listed as one of its two managers. South County Commons, the shopping center, said in a post on its website that Tong Ta would close at the end of the summer and that the space would become Ma lié.

The restaurant's website says Chunhachachavankul trained at Le Cordon Bleu Paris and worked in kitchens in Thailand, Japan, France, the Maldives and Dubai, including four years at Hakkasan at Atlantis The Palm. The South County Star reported Sept. 16 that he planned a menu combining traditional Thai ingredients with local New England seafood. "That is what we can really specialize in and promote, the local seafood," he told the Star. "I think that's what's unique about this state."
