Maine's field hockey team opened America East play with a 3-1 win over UAlbany on Friday, Oct. 2, at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex in Orono.

The Black Bears scored once in each of the first three quarters and held a 3-0 lead before the visitors answered. Maine improved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. UAlbany fell to 3-5 and 0-1.

Taylor Stanford opened the scoring at 6:22 on a penalty corner, with Martha Barratt supplying the assist. Eloise Penty doubled the lead with a penalty stroke at 20:03. Saylor Kuefler added an unassisted goal at 39:13.

UAlbany's Quinty Reumer scored at 49:41, assisted by Jette Kurz and Mara Kuskes, to end Maine's shutout bid. The goal left the Great Danes two behind with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Annabel Halkes made five saves for Maine. UAlbany put six of its eight shots on target, while Maine had five shots on goal from nine attempts. Stanford took three shots, including two on target.

UAlbany earned nine penalty corners to Maine's four. Five of the visitors' corners came in the second quarter, but Maine kept them off the scoreboard through the first three periods. Halkes made two saves in the second quarter and three in the third.

The Black Bears remain at home for their next conference game against New Hampshire on Friday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m.
