Massachusetts plans $31 million in track and siding work in Pittsfield to support permanent seasonal weekend Berkshire Flyer service, Gov. Maura Healey's administration announced Oct. 8.

TheMassDOT agreement with CSXis intended to reduce conflicts between passenger trains and freight traffic. Funding is included in the department's fiscal 2027-31 capital investment plan.

The Berkshire Flyer has operated seasonally between New York City and Pittsfield since 2022. The 2026 schedule added another round trip.

The administration says the infrastructure work will provide a path to permanent seasonal weekend service once completed. That is a future operating goal, rather than an announcement of year-round trains.

MassDOT is also exploring the feasibility of a new Pittsfield station platform. The release does not announce an approved platform construction project.
