Lisa Su, AMD's chair and chief executive and an MIT graduate, received the National Medal of Science from President Donald Trump on Oct. 8.
The White House award announcement cited Su's work in semiconductor engineering and high-performance computing, including processor architecture and the integration of smaller chip components.
Su earned an MIT bachelor's degree in 1990, a master's in 1991 and a doctorate in 1994, all in electrical engineering, according to MIT's account of her career. She joined AMD in 2012.
Her ties to the Cambridge university include a fellowship fund established in 2018 and MIT.nano's Building 12, which was named for her in 2022.
Su returned to MIT as its 2026 commencement speaker. In the May 28 address, she said, "Technology itself does not decide what the future looks like."
Other National Medal of Science recipients announced Oct. 8 were Elon Musk, Sergey Brin and Jensen Huang. Michael Dell and Satya Nadella received the separate National Medal of Technology and Innovation.
