MIT has launched an initiative to expand mathematics, artificial intelligence and hands-on science education for students from kindergarten through community college.
President Sally Kornbluth announced MIT for America on Oct. 6. The university's announcement says the effort will develop new programs and expand existing projects across the country.
Its mathematics work builds on a calculus tutoring program in which MIT students and alumni volunteer with school districts. Other planned work includes teacher training on AI and support for design and fabrication in makerspaces.
"Talent is everywhere. We think opportunity should be, too," Cynthia Breazeal, one of the initiative's faculty co-directors, said in MIT's announcement.
The initiative will draw on MIT RAISE, which develops AI teaching materials and training. That program reports that its Day of AI curriculum is used by educators in all 50 states and 175 countries. Those figures describe existing outreach, rather than results of the newly announced initiative.
RAISE also develops projects that help students build AI applications and consider how the technology should be used.
