Providence is warning people with applications before its boards and commissions about scam emails and invoices designed to look like city documents.

A notice posted as of Oct. 10 on the city's Boards of Review page says applicants have been targeted and advises them against responding, opening links or sending money in response to suspicious messages.

Official city messages use its government email domain, according to the notice. Applicants with questions about a message should contact the office handling their application.

The notice lists Planning and Development at 401-680-8400 and Inspection and Standards, Boards of Review, at 401-680-5375 as verification contacts.

The Zoning Board of Review handles requests for relief from the city's zoning ordinance, while the Building Board of Review handles requests involving the Rhode Island Building Code.
