Rhode Island residents and nonresidents who obtained extensions for their 2025 personal income tax returns must file by Thursday, Oct. 15, the Division of Taxation said.

Returns must be e-filed or postmarked by that date, according to the division's Oct. 9 advisory. The extension provides extra filing time; tax payments for 2025 were due April 15, 2026.

The division recommends electronic filing because those returns are processed faster and usually contain fewer errors. Direct deposit of a Rhode Island personal income tax refund is available for electronic returns; paper filers receive a mailed check.

The advisory also warns that mailed returns are postmarked when the Postal Service processes them. A sender can request a manual postmark at a post office counter.

Qualified taxpayers can use Rhode Island Free File through the division's website. Personal income tax questions can be directed to 401-574-8829, option 3, on business days from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
