Skanska said Oct. 2 that work has begun on a $271 million contract with NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic to build a replacement homeport pier at Naval Station Newport.

The new Pier 1 is designed to berth four U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters. Skanska's announcement anticipates completion in March 2030.

The roughly 1,000-foot-long, 80-foot-wide pier will have new electrical substations, water and wastewater connections and a compressed-air system. The contract also includes dredging, underground utilities and site improvements.

The Coast Guard's environmental review page says the project would adversely affect the Destroyer Piers Historic District and describes consultation with Rhode Island's historic preservation office over mitigation.
