UConn scored a program-record four power-play goals and received 43 saves from Taylor Belchetz in a 4-0 women's hockey win over Clarkson on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs.
The No. 12 Huskies converted all four of their power-play opportunities against No. 9 Clarkson. Belchetz's save total was a career high, and the shutout was her first. The result completed UConn's weekend sweep and left both teams at 2-2 overall.
Claire Murdoch opened the scoring at 16:12 of the first period, with assists from Caileigh Tiller and Livvy Dewar. Sadie Hotles extended the lead at 2:31 of the second, assisted by Laurie Aubin and Ellie Markakis.
Markakis then scored her first collegiate goal at 9:41 of the second period. Aubin and Martha Mobarak assisted, giving Aubin two assists and Markakis her first game with multiple points.
Tiller completed the scoring at 15:02 of the third, with Hotles and Maya Serdachny assisting. Tiller's third goal of the season kept her atop UConn's scoring list for goals. Both Tiller and Murdoch have recorded a point in each of the team's first four games.
Clarkson generated substantially more shots, finishing with a 43-28 advantage. Belchetz stopped 13 shots in each of the first two periods and 17 in the third, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard as UConn extended its lead.
The Huskies blocked 14 shots, compared with Clarkson's nine. UConn was not assessed a penalty, so Clarkson never received a power-play opportunity. Every Huskies goal came with the extra skater, despite Clarkson's advantage in overall shooting volume.
Hotles and Tiller each finished with a goal and an assist. Aubin's two assists accompanied four shots, while Markakis' goal and assist accounted for her two-point afternoon.
UConn next travels to Princeton for games on Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17.
