UConn's women's soccer team beat Providence 2-1 Saturday, Oct. 3, before a record crowd of 3,036 at Morrone Stadium in Storrs.

Chloe Shimkin scored the deciding goal at 66:43, taking a pass from Anaya Johnson at the top of the box. It was the junior's first goal for UConn and broke a 1-1 tie that had lasted since the first half.

The attendance was the largest at the stadium since it opened in 2021. The Huskies gave that crowd an early lead when sophomore Tiana Righetti forced a turnover inside the penalty area and scored at 2:31. That also was her first career goal.

Providence equalized through Courtnee Pickles at 28:03. UConn then needed both Shimkin's finish and goalkeeper Ava Yamas' six saves to take its first Big East win of the season. Yamas made a late leaping save with fewer than eight minutes remaining to preserve the lead.

The Huskies held a 15-9 advantage in shots and put 10 attempts on target. Providence put seven of its nine shots on goal, with Yamas stopping six and Pickles scoring on the other.

SeHanna Mars accounted for seven of UConn's shots, including three on target. The Huskies also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

The two goals ended a three-match scoring drought for UConn. It was the team's first game with multiple goals since a 5-1 win over LIU on Sept. 6.

UConn improved to 3-2-5 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. Providence fell to 2-2-7 and 0-1-1. The Huskies remain at home for a Wednesday, Oct. 7, match against Seton Hall at 6:30 p.m.
