Noemi Martinez stopped all 25 shots she faced as New Hampshire's women's hockey team beat LIU 3-0 on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, New York.
The shutout was Martinez's first of the season and fourth of her career. UNH completed a weekend sweep after Friday's 5-2 win and returned to .500 at 2-2. LIU fell to 0-2.
Julia Cabral gave UNH a 1-0 lead at 3:56 of the first period, assisted by Callista Printz and Charlie Rauch. The Wildcats did not score again until the third, despite holding an 18-5 shot advantage in the middle period.
Addison Finn made it 2-0 at 11:11 of the third, with assists from Sydney Leonard and Madelyn Soderquist. Sofia Kari added an empty-net goal in the final minute, her first collegiate goal. Leonard and Soderquist assisted again, giving each two assists.
UNH finished with 40 shots on goal to LIU's 25. Sharks goalkeeper Kayla Czukoski made 37 saves and allowed two goals, with the final goal coming after she had left the net.
The Wildcats killed all three LIU power plays, including two in the first period when UNH was protecting its early lead. LIU produced two shots on goal across its six minutes with the extra skater.
UNH had one power play, in the second period, and generated four shots during it without scoring. All three Wildcats goals came outside the power play.
The Wildcats return to the Whittemore Center to open Hockey East play against Boston University on Friday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m.
