Brown's teams finished Saturday, Oct. 3, with a volleyball upset, a late women's soccer equalizer and a sixth straight water polo win. Football lost the Governor's Cup to Rhode Island on a field goal with 11 seconds remaining.
Volleyball handed Harvard its first loss of the season, winning 3-1 at Providence's Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown dropped the opening set 27-25, then won 25-14, 25-23 and 25-19 to improve to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League.
Sophia Wolfson had 17 kills and hit .593, while Fisayo Afonja added 16 kills and 10 digs. Julia Kakkis supplied 47 assists. Harvard fell to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Brown next plays at Penn on Friday, Oct. 9.
In women's soccer, Brooke Birtwistle scored twice to earn a 2-2 draw at Penn. Her header from a Joy Okonye corner opened the scoring at 56:45. Penn's Abbey Cook then scored twice before Birtwistle equalized at 86:16 on a free kick from near the center circle.
The result extended Brown's unbeaten run to seven matches and left the Bears 7-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Ivy play. Brown hosts Yale on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3:30 p.m.
Men's water polo beat LIU 16-10 in Brooklyn behind six goals and nine points from Roland Csendes. Brown led 8-5 at halftime and outscored LIU 5-2 in the third quarter. The Bears improved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast Water Polo Conference ahead of their scheduled Sunday visit to No. 9 Princeton.
Football lost 13-10 to URI at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket. Ty Groff's 43-yard kick decided the 44th Governor's Cup after the teams traded fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Qwentin Brown's 1-yard run gave the Bears a 10-3 lead, but Alex McClelland answered with a 12-yard touchdown run 84 seconds later. Brown's Max Malo and Stefano Montella made career-high totals of 19 and 18 tackles, respectively. The Bears fell to 1-2 and host Bryant on Saturday, Oct. 10, at noon.
