Vermont's women's hockey team led twice but lost 3-2 in overtime to No. 7 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington.
Josie St. Martin scored the winner one minute into overtime, her second goal of the game. The result left Vermont at 1-1 after its opening series and improved Duluth to 3-1.
Natalie Zarcone put the Catamounts ahead at 12:22 of the first period during four-on-four play. Sophia DeAnzeris and Rose-Marie Brochu assisted on Zarcone's first goal of the season and sixth of her career.
St. Martin equalized at 17:47, and neither team scored in the second period. Vermont regained the lead at 2:52 of the third when Hilary Wilkin scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by Zoe Charland and Linnea Misner.
Caitlin Kraemer tied the game at 6:46 of the third. Kate Kosobud assisted on that goal and on St. Martin's overtime finish, ending the afternoon with two assists.
Vermont goalkeeper Tara Bach made 25 saves in her second collegiate start. Fifteen came in the first period, when Duluth put 16 shots on goal. The Catamounts reversed that shooting margin in the third, taking 13 shots to Duluth's three, but finished regulation tied.
Duluth held a 28-24 advantage in shots overall. Vermont blocked 17 attempts, including four by Misner, while Duluth blocked 15. Lauren O'Hara led Vermont with four shots on goal.
The Catamounts killed both Duluth power plays, extending their streak to 34 successful penalty kills dating to last season. Vermont went 0-for-3 on its own power plays. Brochu's assist brought her to 50 career points, and she won nine of 15 faceoffs.
Vermont travels to Franklin Pierce for games Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. in Rindge, New Hampshire.
