Philipp Schmidtke's second-half goal earned Vermont a 1-1 draw with NJIT on Saturday, Oct. 3, keeping the No. 12 Catamounts unbeaten at Virtue Field in Burlington.

NJIT led for nearly 55 minutes after Diogo Rebelo scored at 4:58, with assists from Jake Rubis and Jeremy Klinger. Schmidtke equalized at 59:45 on a play assisted by David Ismail and Ezra Widman.

The result left both teams at 1-0-1 in America East play. Vermont is 7-1-3 overall and 5-0-2 at home; NJIT is 5-4-2.

A crowd of 2,753 attended the alumni-weekend match. The home side produced most of its offense after halftime, taking 10 of its 14 shots in the second half. NJIT took six shots before the break and only one afterward.

Vermont finished with three shots on target, while Rebelo's goal was NJIT's only attempt on target. NJIT goalkeeper Andre Faerman made two saves, stopping Luis Vetter at 70:57 and Ismail at 85:08. Vermont goalkeeper Niklas Herceg did not record a save.

Each team also hit the woodwork. Vermont's Mark Isong struck it late in the first half, and NJIT's Zain Thompson did so at 69:08, after Schmidtke had tied the game.

Schmidtke's goal was his fourth of the season. Rebelo's early finish was his fifth. Vermont held a 14-7 edge in total shots, but NJIT earned four corner kicks to the Catamounts' two. All four NJIT corners came in the first half.

Vermont's next conference match is at UMBC on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. The game is scheduled for ESPN+.
