Vermont's swimming and diving team beat Northeastern for the first time in program history Saturday, Oct. 3, winning 158-123 at Forbush Natatorium in Burlington.

The season-opening victory came during the program's celebration of 50 years of conference competition. Northeastern had won all 15 previous meetings, including a 192-108 result in Boston last season.

Ariel Indrisano and Robyn Tonomura-MacDonald each won twice as Vermont took 10 events. Indrisano won the 50-yard breaststroke in 31.04 seconds and also finished first in the 100 breaststroke.

Tonomura-MacDonald swept the diving events for the first time in her career. She scored 238.65 points on the 1-meter board and 253.05 on the 3-meter board. Teammate Valeria Velez placed second in the 3-meter event with 231.98 points.

Vermont began with a narrow relay win. Amaya Olivieri, Gwenyth Lister, Paige Korbely and Anastazja Szukala finished the 200 medley relay in 1:47.38, winning by two-tenths of a second. Olivieri later won the 100 individual medley in 59.72 for her first collegiate individual victory.

The Catamounts entered the season picked third in the America East preseason poll, receiving 18 points and one first-place vote. New Hampshire led that poll with 22 points, ahead of Bryant's 21.

Northeastern's visit also brought back UVM alumna Lauren Colby, the Huskies' diving coach and a three-time CAA Diving Coach of the Year.

Vermont next visits New Hampshire on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. Its next home meet is against Maine on Saturday, Oct. 31, also at 11 a.m.
