AstraZeneca announced Oct. 5 the opening of its research and development center at 290 Binney St. in Cambridge's Kendall Square. AstraZeneca said the building and its genomic medicine site at 100 Binney St. will hold nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists.

In March 2024, BXP said the building was 100% pre-leased to the drugmaker. AstraZeneca said the building is 570,000 square feet and 18 stories, with 10 floors of interconnecting laboratories. BXP's 2024 release also used 570,000 square feet but called the building 16 stories. The Cambridge Redevelopment Authority lists 425,333 square feet of lab and office space and says the building is occupied.

Construction began in 2023 and was completed in summer 2026, according to the authority. The master plan amendment covering the site was approved on Jan. 14, 2022, and the building was approved on April 19, 2022, according to authority records.

In March 2024, BXP sold a 45% interest in the property to Norges Bank Investment Management. BXP said it provides development services for the project and retained a 55% interest in the joint venture after that sale. BXP said the sale would reduce its share of the project's estimated development spend over time by approximately $533.5 million.

AstraZeneca said it is investing more than $1 billion in Massachusetts, part of a $50 billion U.S. investment, and that the Massachusetts spending will expand its workforce in the state by more than 50% "in the coming years."
