Connecticut veterans can apply online for free bus passes through the state's Veterans Affairs office, with passes issued for the transit districts they use.
Depending on the transit district, the benefit comes as a 30- or 31-day pass or a bundle of ride tickets. Veterans generally renew their requests monthly.
The initial application requires a copy of a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veteran Health Identification Card or a Connecticut driver's license or non-driver identification card carrying the veteran designation.
Applicants receive a confirmation email after approval. It includes a unique Veteran Pass ID that can be used for monthly requests without uploading the identification document again. The pass is mailed to the address supplied.
The passes cannot be transferred. Riders must show one of the accepted identification documents when using them.
Veterans Affairs links to the application, a frequently asked questions document and a state directory of transit districts. Riders should identify the district serving their trip before requesting a pass.
