Investigators found no working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms at an Attleboro home where two residents were discovered dead Oct. 14, state and local officials said.

The Attleboro Fire Department responding to a well-being check at 32 Andover Ave. around 11:50 a.m. found Paul Courtemanche, 76, and Carol Courtemanche, 78, along with evidence of a significant earlier fire, according to an Oct. 15 announcement from the Department of Fire Services.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of their deaths. Authorities have not announced a final cause for the fire. Investigators are examining accidental possibilities and do not believe it was intentionally set, the announcement said.

State Fire Marshal Jon Davine urged residents to check that alarms work on every level of their homes.

Attleboro police and fire officials are investigating with state fire investigators and state police assigned to the Bristol County district attorney's office.
