Stephanie Jacob scored the third-period winner as Maine's women's hockey team beat St. Lawrence 4-3 on Oct. 1 at Alfond Arena, delivering coach Alex Gettens his first victory with the Black Bears.

Maine improved to 1-2 after losing its opening two games to Quinnipiac. St. Lawrence dropped to 0-3. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Orono at 3 p.m. on Oct. 2, with the game available on ESPN+.

Mikayla Boarder scored twice, the first two-goal game of her college career, and Maine recovered after falling behind in the third period. Gracie Hanson finished with three assists, the first Black Bear to do so since Anna Zikova in 2018.

Kendall Sundby opened the scoring on a power play with 7:48 remaining in the first period. St. Lawrence tied the game 1:56 into the second before Boarder restored Maine's lead with 6:10 left in that period.

The Saints tied it again before moving ahead 3-2 in the third. Boarder brought Maine back level, and Jacob's deflection supplied the deciding goal.

Maine finished with 43 shots to St. Lawrence's 25. Goaltender Kiia Lahtinen made 22 saves for the Black Bears. Maine also won 36 faceoffs to the Saints' 15, and Lily Fetch contributed two assists.

The win followed 2-1 and 4-1 losses to Quinnipiac on Sept. 25 and 26. Thursday's four goals exceeded Maine's combined scoring in those opening games, while the victory gave the Black Bears a chance to complete a home sweep in Friday's rematch.
