Poet and musician Joy Harjo will read and discuss her work at the University of Rhode Island on Oct. 28 in a free public event at Edwards Hall.

The program runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at 64 Upper College Road on the Kingston campus, according to URI's announcement. It includes an audience question-and-answer session and a book signing.

Harjo, a member of the Muscogee Nation, became the first Native American U.S. poet laureate in 2019 and served through 2022. URI says the reading will draw from a career spanning more than 50 years, including her latest book, "Cloud Runner."

The program will open with a ceremonial welcome to the traditional lands of the Narragansett Nation. URI's Department of English and Creative Writing and its College of Arts and Sciences are sponsoring the event.

Students have studied Harjo's work in university courses, including a Native American literature seminar. Associate professor Martha Elena Rojas said the visit will give students and the public a chance to hear directly from the poet.
