Maine voters can now cast in-person absentee ballots without giving a reason, with the no-excuse voting period running through Oct. 29 ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

The period began Oct. 5. Voters can cast absentee ballots in person at their local town hall, according to the Secretary of State's office. Signed and sealed absentee ballots can also be returned by mail or in a local secure drop box.

More than 70,000 voters had requested absentee ballots as of Oct. 2, the office said. It posts updated absentee ballot reports on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Completed ballots must be received by the close of polls on Election Day. A postmark alone does not meet that deadline. The state has an online tracking service to check whether a clerk has received and accepted a ballot.
