Six Massachusetts child-care and afterschool providers will share $5 million for construction and renovation projects, the Healey administration announced Oct. 21.

Children's Services of Roxbury, the Community Group in Lawrence and the Attleboro Norton YMCA will receive $1 million each. United South End Settlements will receive $900,000 and Nurtury $700,000. The state lists Community Action Agency of Somerville and Preservation of Affordable Housing jointly for a $400,000 award.

The grants can support new classrooms, building expansions, accessibility improvements, heating and cooling systems, outdoor play areas and other major facility needs. They are capital awards for buildings and infrastructure, rather than direct payments to families for tuition.

The Department of Early Education and Care administers the large-project grant program with the Children's Investment Fund, an affiliate of the Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation. Individual awards can reach $1 million.

The announcement does not provide a project-by-project opening schedule or a total number of additional seats from these six awards. Families seeking a place should check directly with a provider about enrollment and the timing of any expansion.
