Massachusetts has created a Veterans Employment Opportunities Commission to examine barriers to employment for veterans and recommend changes, Gov. Maura Healey announced Oct. 28.

Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll swore in the five members at UMass Boston. The commission will make recommendations to the veterans services secretary in an annual report each March. Its work includes considering employment discrimination based on veteran status and ways to connect veterans with employers.

Tom LaRose, director of Veteran Education, Employment and Training, will chair the five-member panel. Other appointees include David Abdoo of MassDevelopment, state Sen. John Cronin, Harvard Business School professor Joseph B. Fuller and Jooyi Ryan, employment coordinator with the VA Boston Veteran Readiness and Employment Program.

The administration also said 32 businesses have either received Veteran Ready certification or pledged to pursue it.

The free employer program concerns hiring and supporting veterans and military spouses. The state announcement provides the commission membership and information on certification.
