MassDOT's plan for a peanut-shaped roundabout at Routes 140 and 62 in Sterling carries an autumn 2029 construction target, according to the agency's project tracker reviewed Oct. 28, 2026.

The single-lane design would replace the intersection's existing two-way stop arrangement at Redemption Rock Trail and Princeton Road. The design handout posted for the scheduled Oct. 14 hearing describes a 16-foot travel lane, new pedestrian crossings and islands where people can wait while crossing.

Five-foot sidewalks and accessible curb ramps are proposed along the intersection's northwest and southwest edges. Cyclists would share the roadway with vehicles, with pavement markings indicating that shared use. The plan does not provide separate bike lanes.

MassDOT says the elongated shape accommodates the roads' approaches, nearby properties, utilities, drainage and environmental constraints. A paved inner area would give larger trucks additional turning room.

The project tracker lists a roughly $4.3 million estimated contract cost and planned funding through the Montachusett region's 2029 Transportation Improvement Program. That regional program lists transportation projects for funding. The construction date is a target; the page lists no associated construction contract.

Project questions can be sent to MassDOTProjectManagement@dot.state.ma.us, identifying project 612612.

Sterling would be responsible for securing needed land rights. The handout anticipates maintaining two-way traffic during most construction, with a local detour during work on the eastern Route 62 approach.
