Massachusetts residents age 75 and older without driver's licenses can apply, as of Oct. 13, for free MBTA fares under the Car-Free Seniors pilot program.

The program covers the subway, buses, Commuter Rail and ferries. It provides 50% off trips on The RIDE, the MBTA's transportation service for eligible people with disabilities.

Applicants must have an active Massachusetts identification card issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles with "Identification Card" across the top. Driver's licenses are not accepted for the free-fare program. Riders 75 and older with licenses can apply for the standard Senior CharlieCard, which offers reduced fares.

The MBTA's MyCharlie website lists the eligibility rules and online application. Approved benefits must be renewed every eight years.

Residents who need application help can contact CharlieCard customer support at 1-888-844-0355 or visit the Charlie Service Center at 296 Washington St. in Boston.
