Middlebury intercepted four passes and held Bowdoin scoreless in a 16-0 football victory on Sept. 26 at Whittier Field in Brunswick, Maine.
The Panthers improved to 1-1 with their first win of the season, while Bowdoin dropped to 0-2. Carson Eutsay accounted for two interceptions, returning one 70 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and taking away a late scoring opportunity with another near Middlebury's goal line.
The game was scoreless until Yaseen Mousa kicked a 30-yard field goal with nine seconds left in the first half. Middlebury moved 67 yards in 12 plays over the final 1:52 to set up the kick.
Eutsay's touchdown return with 9:17 remaining in the third quarter made it 10-0. Later in the quarter, quarterback Aidan Moss found Jordan Angstreich for a 14-yard touchdown. The Panthers missed the extra point, leaving the score at 16-0 with 3:16 left in the period.
That offensive touchdown finished an 80-yard, 12-play drive lasting 4:53. Moss completed 17 of 29 passes for 155 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Angstreich caught four passes for 48 yards.
Connor McClellan contributed in both phases of Middlebury's offense, finishing with 83 net rushing yards and seven catches for 51 yards. Bowdoin nevertheless held the advantage in total yardage, 314-277, and possessed the ball for 33:17 to Middlebury's 26:43.
The Panthers' defense prevented those advantages from producing points. Cutler Hobin and Charlie Grant supplied the other interceptions, while Matt Shaw recorded 12 tackles, including 10 solo stops and two tackles for loss. James Woodward added seven tackles.
Bowdoin quarterback Soren Hummel threw for 232 yards but finished with four interceptions. Bowdoin also failed on both of its fourth-down attempts. Middlebury punter Ty Brinkmann placed four of his seven punts inside the 20-yard line.
The victory was coach Doug Mandigo's 20th at Middlebury and the program's 12th straight against Bowdoin, a run dating to 2012. Middlebury returns home to face Colby at 1 p.m. on Oct. 3.
