New Hampshire heating-assistance agencies are seeing more households apply for the first time as families prepare for winter, NHPR reported Oct. 12.

NHPR reported that heating oil cost nearly $6 a gallon, about $2.50 more than a year earlier, citing federal energy data.

Terra Rogers, energy services director at Southwestern Community Services, told reporter Jackie Harris that the agency had received about 200 more new-household applications than last year. The agency serves Cheshire and Sullivan counties.

The federally funded Fuel Assistance Program helps cover part of an eligible household's heating costs. NHPR reported eligibility extends to households earning up to 60% of the state's median income. Community Action Partnership serving Hillsborough and Rockingham counties lists a maximum benefit of $2,500 for the 2026-27 season.

Ryan Clouthier, chief executive officer of that Community Action Partnership, urged people to apply early so agencies can process requests before benefits begin Dec. 1.

Rogers said households needing immediate help before the program begins should contact their municipal welfare office.
