Providence College scored five first-period goals to beat UMass Lowell 5-2 on Oct. 24, completing a weekend sweep and reaching 5-0 for the first time since the 2002 season.

Freshman Ryder Cali scored twice at Schneider Arena in Providence. Junior John Mustard added a goal and two assists, and Jack Parsons made 26 saves, according to the team's game report.

The Friars improved to 2-0 in Hockey East, the conference portion of their schedule. UMass Lowell fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Mustard opened the scoring 1 minute, 42 seconds into the game. Cali and Will Elger added goals before Lowell's Joey McGraw scored at 12:56.

Cali answered seven seconds later. His second goal initially was waved off for goaltender interference, but a Providence challenge led to a review that allowed it. Aleksi Kivioja made it 5-1 at 15:09 of the first period.

Lowell's Nicholas Wellenreiter scored 59 seconds into the second period. Neither team scored again, and the River Hawks finished with a 28-24 advantage in shots.

The win followed Providence's 3-0 victory at Lowell on Oct. 23. Through five games, the Friars have outscored opponents 21-6.

Providence next visits Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut, for a noon game Oct. 31.
