Providence has scheduled an election for five seats on the Dexter Donation Commission for Oct. 22 at 2 p.m., according to the city's posted agenda.

The meeting will take place in the City Council Chamber on the third floor of City Hall, 25 Dorrance St. The election covers the 2026-2028 term.

City Clerk Tina L. Mastroianni said in an Oct. 13 email that voters must be at least 18, U.S. citizens and Providence residents for at least 30 days before Oct. 22. Proof of current voter registration in Providence satisfies those requirements. Otherwise, voters should be prepared to present two forms of identification, she said.

Candidates are nominated during the meeting, and each nomination must have the support of a second person there. There is no limit on the number of nominees, Mastroianni said. After nominations close, the meeting will pause while printed ballots are prepared, then resume for voting.

Eligible voters may choose up to five nominees. Voting closes at 4 p.m. The five candidates receiving the most votes will become commissioners, with the results announced in the chamber after the count, Mastroianni said.

The Dexter Donation is a trust established under Ebenezer Knight Dexter's will in 1824 to assist people in poverty. The city's program page says trust income is distributed to eligible nonprofit organizations by commissioners elected by Providence residents.

Mastroianni said the election advertisement is included in the agenda. Residents can find future meeting notices on the city's online meeting portal by selecting Dexter Donation.
