Rhode Island's 2026 school results show small gains in math alongside a 3.8-percentage-point decline in grade 11 SAT English language arts proficiency.

The Department of Education released assessment and accountability results Oct. 9. On RICAS, which tests grades 3-8, math proficiency rose 0.4 percentage points to 31.8%. English language arts proficiency fell 0.6 points to 33.1%.

Grade 11 SAT math proficiency increased 0.2 points to 23.5%, while English language arts proficiency fell 3.8 points to 47.8%. Grade 10 PSAT math proficiency rose 2.8 points to 29.3%, and English language arts rose 1.2 points to 56%.

The department said chronic absenteeism fell 2.4 percentage points in 2025-26 compared with the previous school year. It also reported that 56% of schools received accountability ratings of three stars or higher, combining achievement with measures including growth and attendance.

Fewer than one-third of students tested in grades 3-8 were proficient in RICAS math. The department said that measure improved for the fifth consecutive year. The release links to school-level data.
