Rhode Island officials recommend avoiding contact with Lake Washington in Glocester after testing found blue-green algae above advisory thresholds.

The Oct. 9 advisory recommends avoiding swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking. Caution applies across the lake because blooms can move. Pets should not swim in or drink the water, and people should not drink untreated lake water or eat fish caught there.

The algae can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. Anyone who contacts the water should rinse with clean water immediately, then shower and wash clothing at home. Exposed pets should be washed immediately.

People who feel sick, or whose pets show symptoms, should contact a health care provider or veterinarian. The advisory remains in effect until testing shows the bloom has cleared.
