Massachusetts has awarded $5 million to six child-care and afterschool providers for construction, expansion and building repairs.

The Oct. 21 award announcement lists grants of $1 million each for Children's Services of Roxbury, The Community Group in Lawrence and the Attleboro Norton YMCA. United South End Settlements will receive $900,000, Nurtury $700,000, and the Community Action Agency of Somerville with POAH $400,000.

The six awards add to $5 million. They come from the state's capital budget, which finances long-lasting facilities and infrastructure, through the Early Education and Out-of-School Time Large Capital Grant program.

The Department of Early Education and Care administers the program with the Children's Investment Fund, an affiliate of the Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation.

Eligible work includes new classrooms, heating and cooling upgrades, accessibility improvements and outdoor or family-service spaces. The grant program allows awards of up to $1 million per organization.

These are grants to providers for their buildings, rather than payments to families for tuition. The announcement does not list completion dates, current enrollment openings or a combined count of additional children the six projects will serve.

Families seeking a place should check with the individual provider about current availability. A construction award does not mean a new classroom is operating yet.
