University of New Hampshire researchers are helping build a network of automated mountain snow monitors across northern New England, with New Hampshire sites including Mount Washington, Wildcat Mountain and Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.

The University of Vermont leads the National Science Foundation-funded project, called Snow STORE. UNH's share of the funding is $2.6 million, according to the university's announcement.

The project aims to fill gaps left by measurements concentrated at lower elevations and near population centers. Automated equipment is intended to provide more continuous observations of mountain snowpack.

Researchers will use those observations to study changing snow conditions, river runoff and flood risks. The project also includes work to make snow and weather information useful to winter recreation businesses and industries such as farming and logging.

Eleven institutions are collaborating, with university, recreation industry, weather service and nonprofit partners in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. UNH described the project in August; NHPR reported on an Oct. 14 webinar presenting the initiative.
