Vermonters whose mail ballots have a signature or other certification problem can correct it at their polling place on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, before polls close at 7 p.m.
The secretary of state's voting-rights guide says voters can check ballot status at vote.vermont.gov and fix problems at the clerk's office or polling place. Online corrections are available only until the close of business Monday, Nov. 2, which varies by town. Remaining fixes can be made at the polling place Tuesday.
Election officials call the process curing a ballot: correcting a problem that otherwise prevents it from being counted. The portal lets voters check whether a problem needs attention before they go to the polls.
The state's absentee-voting instructions identify problems such as an unsigned certification envelope or a ballot returned outside its required envelope.
Municipal drop boxes are available only until close of business Monday, Nov. 2, which varies by town. Voters can return a ballot to the town clerk's office before it closes Monday or bring it to the polling place in the town where they are registered by 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Vermont Voter Portal lists polling locations.
A voter who wants to vote at the polls but cannot find the mailed ballot can sign an Affidavit of No Ballot Cast before receiving another ballot. The affidavit lets the clerk confirm the voter receives only one ballot. Voters in line at 7 p.m. have the right to vote.
