Two Warren shellfish dealers began recalling clams harvested Sept. 22, 2026, from Rhode Island's Harvest Area 1A while the area was closed because of rainfall, the Rhode Island Department of Health said Oct. 9.
Rhode Island Seafood Company, certification number RI 535 SS, initiated the recall, according to the department's Oct. 9 dealer recall notice. The notice says records obtained from the company indicate that all affected clams went to Tony's Seafood, also in Warren.
Tony's Seafood, certification number RI 397 SP, is conducting a secondary recall of all clams harvested that day from Area 1A. The company is notifying its customers and removing the product from commerce, the department said. Some of the clams were shipped to Massachusetts and Connecticut. According to the department's consumer announcement, those out-of-state contacts are also being notified.
Heavy rain can prompt closures in clamming areas because stormwater runoff can make shellfish unsafe to eat, the department said. The recall covers clams from that harvest date and area.
No illnesses had been reported in connection with the recall when the department issued its Oct. 9 notices. The department said it would provide updates as more information became available.
Questions about the recall can go to the department's Center for Food Protection at 401-222-2749. The department asks people who believe they became sick from something they ate to report it at that number or through its online foodborne illness complaint form.
