Aram G. Garabedian, a former Rhode Island legislator and Cranston City Council president whose business career included leadership of Warwick Mall, died Oct. 30 at age 91, according to his family's funeral notice.
Garabedian served in both chambers of the General Assembly and led the Cranston City Council from 2005 through 2008. His public career began with election to the Cranston School Committee in 1966, the notice says.
A 2015 House resolution honoring his 80th birthday recorded six years on the School Committee, eight years in the House, two in the Senate and four as council president.
The resolution also described his work as president of Bliss Properties and a co-managing partner of Warwick Mall, his role in restoring the mall after the 2010 floods and his support for the World War II memorial in Providence.
In an Oct. 31 statement, U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner called Garabedian "a true Rhode Island original," citing his service as an Army veteran, businessman, elected official and philanthropist.
Garabedian was born May 13, 1935. He graduated from Hope High School and the University of Maine and served in the Army, according to the family notice. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jane, and their children, Lisa Garabedian Regan and Gary Bliss Garabedian, among other relatives.
