Connecticut has reported six influenza deaths since late September, its first reported flu deaths of the season, the Department of Public Health announced Oct. 28.

All six were among adults ages 55 or older. One was reported in the week ending Sept. 26, three in the week ending Oct. 17 and two in the week ending Oct. 24, according to the department.

The figures describe reported deaths and reporting weeks. They do not establish that every person died during the week in which the death was reported.

The department recommends annual flu vaccination for people age 6 months and older. It said protection takes about two weeks to develop after vaccination.

People at higher risk of serious illness should contact a health care provider promptly if they develop symptoms, the department said. Its announcement links to vaccination resources, including the Connecticut Vaccines for Adults program, which provides vaccines to eligible uninsured and underinsured adults through participating providers.
