Gorham's Planning Board unanimously approved Amazon's warehouse off Main Street. The Monday vote still leaves state and Army Corps permits, and the $4 million land sale had not closed.
The plan is a 146,280-square-foot building on 94 acres. Site plans put daily truck, van, and car trips above 3,000. The lot is 5 miles from the Maine Turnpike, so the traffic would use Route 25 through Westbrook.
A resident told the board, "You people are going to regret this someday," then left with the other opponents. Town Planner Carol Eyerman said staff visited an Amazon warehouse beside Interstate 495 in Littleton, Massachusetts, and did not drive through the surrounding neighborhood, because that building sits on the highway. In Gorham, Amazon cut van spaces from 542 to 475 to fit a berm facing houses on Shamrock Drive, where residents have objected to a 24-hour operation. The council agreed last August to sell Amazon the land for $4 million. Either side can still walk away. Josh Trombley of Gorham United wants a moratorium, dated to apply from Sept. 1, on industrial projects above 1,500 daily trips. The petition needs 1,413 signatures. It had almost 400 Monday night.
