Maine marine researchers plan to survey plankton and lobster larvae, an early life stage, in the Maine Research Array wind-energy area between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2027.
The Department of Marine Resources and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences will measure the abundance of tiny drifting animals called zooplankton, as well as lobster abundance and larval development stages. The work is scheduled for up to two days per month aboard the research vessel Maine.
The department says the surveys will establish baseline information for comparison with data collected during construction and operation of the research array.
Boaters are asked to keep at least 100 feet from the research vessel, giving it the same consideration as an active commercial fishing boat. The department does not currently expect to ask fishermen to move gear, but says it will issue further notices if gear density prevents survey work.
Detailed schedules will be posted as available. Questions and lost-gear reports can be directed to Casey Yanos at 207-350-7165 or casey.yanos@maine.gov, or to a local Marine Patrol officer.
