Maine's Department of Education has released a free Wabanaki studies guide as schools begin Native American Heritage Month in November.

The department says its Wabanaki studies specialist developed the resource with contracted Wabanaki advisors and educators. The materials are intended for use throughout the school year, the department says.

The Oct. 30 announcement lists curriculum adaptable across grade levels, materials for teaching about Thanksgiving, online learning modules, printable bulletin board resources and short professional-learning courses.

Schools and other educational programs may use and share the resources without charge, according to the department.

The department says the guide is meant to help students learn about the Wabanaki Nations' continuing presence, contributions and cultures. The department says the materials are designed to connect with existing units across subjects throughout the year.

The department's announcement links directly to the downloadable guide and its broader Wabanaki studies collection. Brianne Lolar, the state's Wabanaki studies specialist, is listed as the contact at brianne.lolar@maine.gov.
