Massachusetts announced $1.9 million in apprenticeship grants Oct. 14 to 10 organizations whose programs project registering 303 apprentices.
The GROW Intermediary grants support organizations that help employers create and expand registered apprenticeships. Those programs combine paid work with classroom instruction and lead to recognized credentials.
The awards include $468,000 for the Boston Private Industry Council to support 72 apprenticeships in surgical technology, sterile processing and medical assisting. MassHire Hampden County Workforce Board will receive $292,500 for 45 placements in health care, social services and manufacturing.
UMass Boston will receive $175,500 for 27 direct support professional apprenticeships serving people with disabilities. Other awards cover marine engine repair, automotive work, building maintenance and credit analysis.
The 303 placements are the recipients' projections, rather than a count of people already hired. The funding includes new awards and contract renewals, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The state also announced a tour of apprenticeship programs, including stops at Pfizer in Andover on Oct. 20 and Waltham Public Schools on Oct. 21.
