Massport broke ground Oct. 13 on a $500 million project at Braintree Logan Express that would let participating travelers clear airport security on Forbes Road before boarding a secure bus to Logan.

The project includes a permanent remote terminal and two eight-level parking garages, bringing the site to 5,500 spaces when complete, according to Massport's announcement. Arrowstreet is the architect and Consigli the construction manager.

Travelers using the remote terminal would pass through Transportation Security Administration screening in Braintree and arrive at Logan beyond the airport security checkpoint. The agency has not announced which airlines the Braintree terminal would serve.

The project follows a remote-screening pilot that began June 1 at Framingham Logan Express. Massport said that pilot had carried more than 22,000 passengers as of Oct. 13. The Framingham service serves Delta and JetBlue passengers, according to the agency's July update.

Construction in Braintree is planned in two phases, with Logan Express service and parking continuing. Massport says customers will be able to reserve parking at the MBTA's Quincy Adams garage through SpotHero and take a shuttle to the Braintree site during construction.

Massport expects the first phase, including the terminal and one garage, to finish within the next few years. Massport did not provide a detailed breakdown of the $500 million project cost.
