Mount Independence State Historic Site will mark the Revolutionary War's 250th anniversary with a guided walk Saturday, Oct. 24, and an afternoon of talks Sunday, Oct. 25.

Saturday's program, titled Go Home Guy Carleton, runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Orwell site. Participants will walk with experts to the horseshoe battery, a defensive position near the point.

The state describes the program as a commemoration of the British fleet's return to Canada in late October 1776. The historical discussion will examine how the defenses at Mount Independence helped give American forces time to prepare for the following year.

Visitors should wear walking shoes and clothing suited to the weather. If conditions are poor, the site says the discussion will take place inside.

Sunday's program runs from 1 to 4 p.m. with breaks between talks, so visitors can attend one presentation or stay for the afternoon. Announced subjects include soldiers' backgrounds and the ethnic and cultural diversity of the forces at Mount Independence, including the problems of supplies, disease and prejudice.

Both programs are included with general admission. The site lists 802-948-2000 for details, including current admission and visitor information.
