Rescuers carried an injured Connecticut hiker down Mount Moriah late Oct. 22 after a leg injury near the summit left him unable to continue a planned three-day trip.

New Hampshire Fish and Game said in its Oct. 23 account that Thomas McGrimley, 42, of Cheshire slipped on steep ledge near the summit, about 4 miles from the parking area. His companions called 911, and the agency was notified around 2 p.m.

A passing hiker splinted the injured leg and stayed to help. McGrimley and his companions made some progress down the Carter-Moriah Trail while the rescue response was underway.

Conservation officers and volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue and Lakes Region Search and Rescue responded. Fish and Game said 24 volunteers took part.

The first rescuers reached McGrimley at 6:15 p.m. They placed his leg in a vacuum splint and carried him in a litter, a stretcher used for difficult terrain. The group reached the parking lot at 10:55 p.m.

A Gorham ambulance crew assessed him before he was transported to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, the agency said.

Fish and Game described the hikers as well prepared, with equipment and supplies for several days. Its account does not provide a later medical update.
