New Britain will receive $6.9 million in state grants for drainage and utility work around Allen Street, while a separate $250,000 program will help eligible homeowners repair flood damage, state and city officials announced Oct. 21.
The infrastructure work includes a new stormwater system, replacement sewer and water lines, and road repairs. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027. The governor's office attributes recurring flooding in the neighborhood to an aging drainage system that struggles during heavy rain.
The homeowner program will be administered by the state comptroller's office. Former state Rep. Peter Tercyak has volunteered to oversee final approval of eligible applications.
Residents who qualify will be contacted in the coming weeks with application information and instructions for scheduling damage assessments, according to Comptroller Sean Scanlon. The program administrator must approve compensation amounts before the comptroller's office sends payments.
The announcement does not set an application deadline or a maximum payment per home. The state says the program is for homeowners in the area who have been disproportionately affected by flooding.
