Pack Monadnock's hawk-watch season continues through Nov. 20, giving visitors a chance to see a different mix of migrating raptors as October progresses.

In a Sept. 15 post on the Harris Center website, raptor biologist Kate McKay described September as the peak for large movements of broad-winged hawks. October generally brings fewer birds overall but a wider variety of species, including the possibility of golden eagles and American goshawks.

The Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory operates at Miller State Park. Its seasonal count runs Sept. 1-Nov. 20, and observations are submitted to the Hawk Migration Association, according to the Harris Center.

McKay wrote that northwest winds following a cold front produce the best hawk-watching days. November typically brings red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks as colder weather reduces food availability, she wrote.

Visitors should prepare for cold, wind and fog on the summit. Harris Center recommends park reservations, particularly for those planning to drive up. Check Miller State Park's current access information before traveling, since weather and seasonal operations can affect plans.
