Providence police recorded 195 motor vehicle thefts through Oct. 25, compared with 317 during the same period in 2025, a decline of about 38%, according to the department's latest weekly comparison report.

The citywide report shows larcenies moving in the other direction: 1,580 this year, compared with 1,481 a year earlier, an increase of about 7%. That category includes shoplifting, bicycle thefts and several other types of stealing.

The report lists five homicides through Oct. 25, compared with one in the equivalent 2025 period. The five-year weighted average for the same period is seven, according to the report.

These are offenses recorded by police. They are not convictions, and they do not include crimes that were never reported. The department labels the figures preliminary and subject to revision.

Police explain on their crime-data page that weekly reports use information available on Monday mornings. Later investigation can change how incidents are classified and revise previous totals.
