Rhode Island groups planning volunteer cleanups or beautification projects have until Oct. 30 to apply for Litter-Free Rhode Island microgrants of up to $500.

Projects must be finished by Dec. 11. There is no matching-fund requirement, and applicants can request less than the maximum, according to the Department of Environmental Management's fall grant announcement.

Eligible expenses include gloves, trash bags and litter pickers, T-shirts, posters and signage, food and water for volunteers, and dumpster or hauling charges.

The notice lists schools, community groups and municipal departments among potential applicants, while requiring applicants to provide documentation of nonprofit status.

Awards are made on a rolling basis and issued through the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank. DEM considers the project's size, scope and expected participation.

After completing the work, recipients must submit a cleanup report with photographs, participant numbers and the amount of material collected. The state announcement links to the application.
